Sweet Halloween Pumpkin Swag

October 14, 2021 | DIY Seasonal Decor, Halloween, Our Favorite Designs, Swag

I can not believe it is October already. I know most people are already all ready with their decor made and costumes picked out. You might have already purchased all your Halloween candy as well to give out to those cute trick or treaters. If you are like me and a little behind in your Halloween decor making then you will want to grab these supplies and make this easy and simple Halloween pumpkin swag! You will love adding this Halloween swag to your front porch this year.

Pumpkin Halloween Swag

Using the traditional colors of orange and black will always help to define your decor for Halloween. But not everything about Halloween has to be spooky and scary. It can be fun and full of whimsy things. In fact, that is what I really love about Halloween. No matter your style or preference, it’s easy to create something spectacular and simple for your personal decor. This project is definitely more on the whimsy side, but switch out those pumpkins with some creepy skulls or ghosts, and bam. Super scary!

black swag with pumpkins and checkered ribbon

In this tutorial, I will show you step by step how to take black garland swag from boring to BOOOOOtiful.  I will teach you how to transform it into something eye-catching, fun, and not so frightful. This sweet pumpkin Halloween swag is a great beginner’s craft. There are not a lot of technical elements to it, but you can’t tell that by looking at it! That is why I love it so much.

Throughout this project,  I will teach you some specific crafting vocabulary like, “Shaking Hands,” and “Breaking the Plain.” I will share tips and tricks as I do for members who are part of my Design School. These terms are not meant to scare you, even if you are blasting the haunting Halloween tunes as you work, but to get you feeling comfortable in the crafting world! Let me teach you step-by-step how to do just that. Be sure to check out my design school if you are interested in learning more about creating your own designs.

Join the waitlist to know when it opens up again and you can learn more techniques when it comes to making your own floral and decorative holiday designs.

This is a simple project that helps you have a one-of-a-kind Halloween decor in little to no time. Be sure to grab your supplies and follow along with me in the tutorial video! Just remember to have some fun and check back soon for new videos and instructions.

Directions

  • Grab your Large Black Swag Base and let’s begin to shape it up. In design school, we call that “Shaking Hands.” We will take each piece and spread and manipulate it to make it full. Not so much fun, but oh so necessary.
  • Prop it up on your wreath board so it is easy to work with. This helps to visualize your piece so that you properly add features to create depth and dimension throughout.
  • Beginning at the top of swag, insert your first Double Sided Polka Dot Striped Fuzzy Curly Stem.  No need to cut your stems. Work down into your swag and secure by twisting the tines around your stem in a couple of spots. The black stem will hide right into the black base of your swag.
  • Remember to open up your curly stems by “Shaking Hands,” so they are stretched and bouncy. Insert two and place headed one direction on swag and 2 the other direction. Insert so one is lower than the other and not “Matchy-matchy.” This creates length.
  • Next, grab your 2 Lollipop Sprinkle Sprays. Dip ends into hot glue and staggering them in your hands. Insert into swag so they are placed in the center of your 2 polka dot curly stems on both sides of swag. Use tines to secure as well.
  • Repeat down on the bottom of the swag, remembering to stagger your 2 additional lollipop sprays.
  • Time to add your Velvet Harlequin Rhinestone Pumpkins. Grab some floral pins dipped in hot glue to add your first foam pumpkin. You will use several pins and hot glue to place them securely. Manipulate your pumpkins so you like how they rest, one to the side down lower in the center.
  • The second pumpkin will be a bit higher and more to the right on your swag. Use a wire if the pins are not working for you. A lot of floral pins will be needed so don’t worry. Just make sure they are hidden in the back.
  • We will make 1 funky bow for this swag. The recipe for this bow is a 2-1 Measure out an 8 inch tail. Start your tail up. Make your loop at 7 inches, then go to the center and twist. Then twist again and repeat making two loops on each size. Take and fluff your loops out and hold at the center as you continue to make your loops. Scrunch it down and pull your tail to 8 inches and cut.
  • Adding in your second ribbon, make your tail and loops the same length. Making only two loops with this ribbon.
  • Add the orange striped ribbon with 2 loops to the top. Making your tail 1-2 inches shorter. Make one loop on each side at 5 inches. Secure with a cable tie. Making one tail up and one tail down. That makes it a funky bow.
  • Secure it with a cable tie. Then fluff up your loops, and I have cut my tails to go opposite directions of each other. Now attach a cable tie to the back of your bow. This is how you will attach it to your swag.
  • Using a coordinating ribbon cut a little strip of ribbon and use this to tie around the center of your bow to hide your mechanics.
  • Add your bow up high on your swag in the open space by the top of the pumpkin. Zip tie it to swag first. Trim excess zip tie
  • We will add some ribbon tails in the open spot in the lower center. Begin with a stack of ribbons. 4 in” ribbon on bottom, then a solid orange ribbon, and top with your striped ribbon. Cut so the tails are all the same length. With a zip tie, cluster the ribbons on one end and trim excess zip tie. To give the appearance it is coming from the bow up top in swag, we will add the clustered end tucked up behind the top pumpkin. Add hot glue to the cluster and secure it with a tine swag under the pumpkins.
  • Create a poof in ribbons by gathering it. Then secure another section with a cable tie. Trim excess cable tie before you tie it then into your wreath. Dovetail the ribbon ends, so they are all staggered in length. This forces our eyes to transition from one side to the other. It is just so eye-appealing and fun.
  • Add your first Black and White Harlequin Curly Stem down by your tails poking from under the pumpkins. Add the second one poking from the side of your bow. Manipulate your curly cues how you like to make it extra whimsical.
  • Wire them in to secure the stems with your swag tines. These curly stems should look as if they are “Breaking the plane,” in the back section of our swag. The ribbons will be in the center of your plane and the pumpkins on top.
