How to Make a Sunflower Swag with Check Bow
Sunflowers are hot this summer. We are going all-in on this adorable sunflower swag with a black and white check bow. The best part is we are using a pre-made swag base. Love these because most of the work is already done for you. You could even add a bow at the top and call it a day. We aren’t though and are going to add the drama and take this design to the next level.
The bow is a 3-2-1 Blastoff bow that is a nice and full focal point right at the top. The black and white check ribbon adds drama and the Sunflowers coordinate so well with the overall design.
We’ve got plenty of drama so let’s add some depth and dimension by using some willow twig sprays. You can manipulate the twigs to move wherever you’d like and they are so delicate and whimsical. Placing the long tails from the bow towards the back also amps up the dimension. It helps by drawing your eye through the entire piece to the back of the design. It’s a great way to create depth just by placing things in the right space. What a great Summertime project that is so quick and easy to fill your online store or freshen up your own home!

- Start by prepping your pre-made swag base with sunflowers by “shaking hands” and fluff and adjust leaves and flowers to shape your base how you’d like.
- Measure how long you’d like your ribbon tails by seeing how long your base is. Grab your EZ Bow Maker and add the 1.5” Sunflower check ribbon onto the spool. Let’s make a blast off bow starting with the long tail, running the length of the base, and make three 6.5” loops on each side. Trim the tails at opposite angles.
- Add another layer of ribbon starting with a tail 6” shorter than the first. Make two 5.5” loops on each side and trim the tails at opposite angles. For the last layer, make a bow tie large enough to have a 5” loop on each side, slightly overlapping in the back. Gather the center and add to the dowels.
- Pull your bow off and run a cable tie around the center, not closing all the way. Fluff the loops and tails and insert another cable tie through the back. Cinch closed. Cut a small length of ribbon and fold it over onto itself. Tie around the center to hide the cable tie and trim the extra from the back.
- Grab your swag base and add your Sunflower pick onto the top. Secure with a couple of cable ties. Hot glue Spanish moss or a leaf on top if you need to hide the mechanics.
- Take your willow spray twigs and “shake hands” with the branches and twigs. Add on the bottom to the left and a second twig higher and to the right. Attach with cable ties onto the stems. Bend over the stems from the backside to keep it secure. Trim any extra off.
- Add another willow spray to the top and bend the twigs to incorporate them into your design. Use a cable tie and avoid blocking the swag hanger. Grab your Sunflower and check blast off bow and cable tie into the space at the top.
- Pull the longest tails into the back and curl the front ties around your fingers. Curl any twigs or adjust any stems you need and enjoy your beautiful Sunflower swag!
