I love adding new and interesting textures to my wreath, and this adorable Flower Bow is such a unique way to do it! A twist in the classic wreath bow, this bow adds whimsy and fun to any wreath with an unexpected shape and multiple colors.
How to Make A Bow That Looks Like a Flower
Bows are such a fun way to switch up your wreath. It’s so easy to add some new colors or patterns with ribbon, and I love how bows tend to make a wreath seem more finished. That said, I love a unique bow!
It’s fun to add something unexpected to a wreath, whether it’s a pop of color or, in this case, a unique bow. This Flower Bow is so fun because it draws on the floral elements already in your wreath. You can match the colors already there or add a new, fun pop of color to create even more of a statement.

This Flower Bow, like all our bows, is really customizable too. You can use whatever color ribbon works with your wreath. Make your bow bigger or smaller depending on what you need it for. You could even make a few small Flower Bows and stick them throughout your wreath. The possibilities are endless, and you’re sure to find a way to add this beautiful bow to your wreath.
Ingredients
Directions
- Begin by measuring your first tail for your 1.5” ribbon. The length is up to you, but I made mine with 8” tails. Place your ribbon in between the center pegs of your bow maker at that 8” mark. Add a strong twist, with your right hand twisting forward and your left hand twisting back.
- Next, create your loops. I made 7” loops because I wanted them to be big and puffy. These loops will make the back of your flower. To create your loops, measure 7”, then loop the ribbon back, meeting again in the center of the pegs. Twist firmly again, then do the same, going the other direction. Follow this same process to create your loops. I made 8 loops, 4 on each side, to create a large flower.
- Cut your second tail off to match your first. Now, with your 5/8” ribbon, cut your first tail a few inches shorter than your other ribbon. I went with 6” tails.
- Follow the same process to create your loops, but you’ll want these loops to be smaller than the others, so that you can create dimension. I went with 6” loops. Make as many loops as you like. I think more if better with this smaller ribbon. I ended up doing 3 loops on each side that were 6” and 3 loops on each side that were 5”. This created a fun effect!
- Cut your second tail to match your first. Thread your zip tie under your ribbons beside your dowels and loosely tighten it. Wiggle your ribbons up and off your pegs. Be very careful and go slowly, or you might lose your bow’s shape.
- Rotate the zip tie around the back, and fluff your ribbons. This is where the magic happens. You’ll see that your flower comes into shape! Add it to your wreath, and enjoy!
TIPS AND TRICKS
- Pull inspiration from nature for your colors. Mix and match to create a beautiful flower bow for your wreath. I used green and plaid, but you could use green and pink, a darker green with a lighter green. Whatever you think looks good and matches your wreath!
- You can make this bow without a bow maker, though it’s a bit more tricky. You’ll use your fingers to pinch anywhere the instructions mention the pegs. You’ll need to be sure that you are careful to keep all the ribbons tight, though, or your flower will lose its shape.
Do bows go on the top or bottom of a wreath?
A great question! I do both. It will depend on the placement of your florals and where you want your focal point to be. Because the bow will have different textures and colors than your florals, it will naturally act as your focal point. If you want eyes to travel to the top of the wreath, then add your bow there. Same for the bottom of your wreath. It will depend on the wreath you are creating and your preference.
What is the best ribbon for making a Flower Bow?
I prefer wire-edged ribbons for all my bows. I love a big, loopy bow that holds its shape, and wire-edged bows are the only way to go for that. You can choose to use a non-wire-edged ribbon, but your bow will be much floppy. You might get away with it if you make a very small bow, like 1”-1.5” loops, but big bows are best with wire-edged ribbons.
