How To Make A Wreath Using A Garland

September 22, 2022 | DIY Seasonal Decor, Fall, Wreath Tutorials

All the rage has been upcycling and repurposing things lately. No matter the item, it can always be used for something a little different. And, a lot of times it will turn out better than the original. My friends, this DIY Fall Wreath using garland is a great example of that.

Making a Fall Wreath Using a Garland

Taking apart this garland allowed me to spread that beauty and create multiple, beautiful fall designs using it not as it was originally intended. Hence, the upcycle/repurposing phrase. I am so trendy, it is not even funny. Can I say that?

If I say that, does it make me not trendy? Hold on. Let me focus. So this wreath is fabulous, and  I am so excited to teach you how to create your own fantastic Fall Wreath using a Garland.

Inspiration comes from all areas. It came for this project from this fancy, expensive fall leaves and brush pumpkin garland.

I loved the colors so much found in this garland, and can you blame me? Seeing all the beauty that can come from one garland helped me want to be able to spread that beauty throughout my home instead of keeping it focused on one specific spot.

The best part of repurposing a garland is that a lot of times when deconstructing it, you have a lot of the hard work already done for you. A high-end garland has great detail and overall amazing quality.

Using a garland is definitely cost-effective, because you have such beautiful pieces to work with. The thing to keep in mind is that it is a little more labor-intensive. You will need to work harder to properly prep your embellishments as you remove them from the original garland. But y’all, in my opinion, it is always worth it!

So even if the garland might be a little pricey, to begin with, it is okay. Just keep in mind that you can create multiple projects to decorate your home from it.

Whether you are creating this piece for yourself personally or to sell, let me walk you through the steps to get it done with ease. I can teach you how to get this look in less than an hour. Are you ready to have some fun with flowers?

Directions

  • Grab your 14” grapevine and prop up on your Wreath Design Stand for the easiest way to create.
  • Apply a hanger to the back for easy hanging later on once complete.
To begin, break down your garland by cutting it into sections with wire cutters. Keep them long in sections as you cut. Remember this will take some time to properly remove your pieces, but prep work is always key for success.
  • Create a visual image before you craft, so you have an initial plan.
Use the big magnolia leaves as a background to add first to your wreath to create a big base. Dip stems in hot glue as you add into your grapevine. Maintain the focal point as you place your leaves. Since they are wired, manipulate where needed. 3 up top and 3 on the bottom to start.
  • Next, add some of the bigger pieces. Rest your pumpkin bundle among the bottom leaves. Add your gourd up top tucked in those leaves. Add a pinecone too. Pull leaves out to tie the look together.
  • Using your Spanish moss, hide your mechanics where needed. Add more leaves to the inside as you work. Maintain the flow. Next, let’s add in some fillers. Using your Brown Dried Sorghum Stem, add in amongst those gorgeous leaves and fall embellishments already placed adding motion to your wreath.
  • Next, add your 6″ Natural Net Jute Ribbon creating a tail down below. Tie it into your grapevine by using a cable tie weaved in the holes of the ribbon. Secure in place to add and enhance the colors and tones in this wreath. Use a cable tie to secure it placed at an angle to add some dimension. Crimp it and trim tails.
  • Add a second piece of ribbon in the center, creating a traditional 2 loop bow, loop up and loop down. Use a cable tie to secure it in place. Next, let’s add the pine pieces from the garland and another magnolia leaf to work in filling in throughout the wreath.
  • Add in your next pine cone to add some height up top, tucked amongst the beauty already added. Add some twigs and the white berries from the garland both up top and down below the center bow.  Keep the angles as you add.
  • Take a step back and fill in any spots, adjust any florals, fillers, garland embellishments and the bow where needed. Then give yourself a pat on the back for creating this beauty.

How many projects can you create from using one garland?

Y’all, I will be honest. My goal was to create 3 beautiful, fall colored DIY projects from one high-end garland. This DIY Fall Wreath was my second.  And after completing it, I have just under half of the original garland left. I should easily reach my goal without question. That is amazing, especially considering how cost-effective this garland purchase will turn out in the end. I simply added 2 extra little bushes to help fill in this wreath and voila. This is just beautiful. Repurposing this garland to spread its beauty of it is just as easy as following the steps above!
